From November 17 to 19, 2023, the second International Companion Animal Welfare Conference was held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, with the theme "New Cognition, New Standards, New Industry Forms." During the conference, various forums were held, including the Urban Pet and Human-Pet Harmony Forum, the Animal Hospital Management Forum, the Pet Nutrition and Health Management Forum, and the Pet Industry Development Roundtable Forum. On the afternoon of the 18th, Lai Yongyong from the Middle-aged and Elderly Pet Health Research Institute presented a report titled "Nutritional Needs and Product Development Ideas for Middle-aged and Elderly Pets" at the Pet Industry Development Roundtable Forum. The report introduced the current situation of middle-aged and elderly pets, physiological changes, and the six major nutritional needs of middle-aged and elderly pets. It also discussed how the Middle-aged and Elderly Pet Health Research Institute, based on the digestive and absorption characteristics of middle-aged and elderly pets, proposed a new product development approach, from the selection of raw materials to the formulation process, ultimately resulting in nutritional health food suitable for middle-aged and elderly pets. ND Microsphere Technology (Nutrition & Defence Microsphere) is a technology where Hui Jia shares the "intestinal dissolution and slow-release process" used in human pharmaceutical formulations for the first time in the field of animal medicine. It has a 20-year mature technology accumulation in the field of large animals and was officially introduced to the pet field in 2020. The intestinal dissolution and slow-release process involves encapsulating nutrients (such as probiotics) with special polymer materials, which can withstand gastric acid and bile salts and can slowly release in the intestine, significantly improving utilization rates. At the conference, two experimental results of the ND Microsphere process, "The Probiotic Microsphere Process and Its Role in Regulating the Fecal Form of Middle-aged and Elderly Pets" and "The Encapsulation Process of Sodium Butyrate and Its Impact on the Intestinal Health of Middle-aged and Elderly Dogs," won the third prize for outstanding posters at the conference.
In addition, based on the intestinal, joint, and immune issues of middle-aged and elderly pets, the Middle-aged and Elderly Pet Health Research Institute proposed solutions and integrated the ND Microsphere process into freeze-drying to develop freeze-dried nutritional health products suitable for middle-aged and elderly pets. We will continue to practice the concept of "harmonious coexistence between humans and pets," committed to improving the quality of life for pets, extending their lifespan, and promoting the healthy development of the pet industry.
